synchronous callserver on save of DCR

Hi,
I have a requirement to check on the database on save of DCR and then either allow user to save DCT or alert him. I have used callserver to verify the database. I know it is a asynchronous call. I have to hold the JS control till I get the status from callserver and move further. setTimeout doesn't work for me as it leaves the control immediately. I also tried to hold control with some delay function and keep checking on the status. But, the sleep is nothing but a while loop and I believe it is not leaving control of JS for callserver to set the status in Formapi.
I would like to know from the experts is there any (better) way in Teamsite to achieve this. Or do we have to work on some synchronous call like XMLHttpRequest.

Env: TS 6.5 Sp2 on windows server 2003

I did something similar once with the plain vanilla DCT call-back Functions. The idea is to execute callSever, set a
timeout and return unconditional 'false' on the onSaveValid Event. callServer then renders code that executes
one of the two call-back Functions, one where you'd save the DCR yourself, another to give warning. Timeout is used to
[post=83629]cancel hanged callServer request[/post], etc.

Thanks for your suggestion. I have done kind of same implementation.
I called a callserver script and returned false. There is settimeout which calls a function callserverstatus. That checks on the value of JS variable that callserver script is supposed to set. If not it will call setttimeout again. It will do it for 10 sec and return script failure.
For this I had to handle saving mechanism in my code. As this implementation should also work fine for newly created DCR (without name) as well as old one. I tried IWDCRInfo.setDCRName(null) which works perfectly, if we do not return control from formapi. But, if tried to call from callserverstatus function, it does not pop up the workarea browse window to save new DCR. So, finally I called window.open(...) with the URL for saving the DCR and did worked as expected. But, I see a slight performance issue (may be for that time) and the window that it opens is of the same size as DCR. I need to find a way to size it as it open default. I tried giving ("width=350","height=250"), but it throws error as invalid arguments.

What is the problem you are trying to solve?

To size the window you can use the 'specs' parameter of the window.open() method, see for example here
Is there something else?

The problem that I am facing here is with the required fields. If user does not fill the required fields and click on save, I am returning false unconditionally.
Now, depending on the callserver status, I will either open a window to save DCR or alert the user. In this case, there is no validation for the required fields and it saves the DCT, even if required fields are blank. I can loop through the fields and check the isValid on each item and set setHighlightMode. But, I was looking more for some built in way to find out any invalid items or ask formpublisher to validate required fields again. Any pointers here.

On which event are you calling your callServer code? onSave, onSaveValid, onSaveDone, etc.?

I believe it should be onSaveValid which allows the validation code to be called before you attempt to actually name/save the DCR.
