Starting TeamSite as a non-root user

Hi Folks,

One of the enhancements touted for TeamSite 6.7.1 is the ability to run TeamSite as a "non-root" user. As I don't have root access, this is very appealing. However, there is little documentation on how to do this (and also, little that I could find on DevNet - hence this post).

What I tried to do was start TeamSite by running

/etc/init.d/iw.server start

as the

iwts

user. TeamSite obviously failed to start. What I have discovered (after logging a case with support) is that you need to start TeamSite using

sudo

. Sadly, my Sys Admins will not allow

sudo

on any of our machines (a situation that would be quite common I would wager!). Oh well...back to the ol' drawing board.

Anyway, I thought this was worth posting for other newbs.

Support team's response is correct! One cannot start TeamSite as

iwts

. It would have to be either root or should have sudo access.

As for the documentation, TeamSite 6.7.1 SP1 Administration Guide for Unix has a dedicated section on "Running as Non-Root User"

Hi Vineet,

Unfortunately this section in the Administration Guide only refers to the effect of running the "iwutild" process as non-root. Whilst being essential information, what I was referring to as "missing" was explicit reference to needing to start teamsite using the sudo tool if you want to run teamsite as non-root. More of a "broader" explanation as to the concept of running teamsite as non-root.

Anyway, for what it is worth, I have logged a request with IWOV support to look at enabling Teamsite to run as non-root without the need for the sudo application. And they have accepted that as a CR to evaluate.
