Ownership
phd
While creating Branches in Teamsite, we have to provide with a user id for ownership of the branch. This id has to be an individual and cannot be a group.
I am not sure if anyone has faced this problem, but what happens when this individual leaves the organization and his id is deleted.
Alternatively has anyone tried using a generic account. If yes. Are there any issues regarding that? What does Interwoven suggest?
Best Regards
Pawan

best bet would be to use the "Administrator" account.

With TS 5.5.2, at least on Solaris, it's now relatively easy to change the owner of a branch or workarea. You simply, with root priviledge of course, chown and/or chgrp the appropriate directory. I think how you set up your branches and workareas is relative to your needs. If you need more than one person to be able to administer the workarea, you would probably want a generic account that more than one person has access to owning the branch.

Hey Dave,
I know we swapped emails on this earlier, but if you chown the owner of the branch, the immediate subdirectories WORKAREA, EDITION and STAGING don't get changed.
I forgot the outcome of that observation --- does ownership of those subdirs have any impact on administration?
Or does the changing the branch ownership in 5.5.2 propogate to those immediate subdirs?

Yes I remember, Tom. I searched back to that thread and here's the ultimate answer to that question from Bob Walden from Interwoven:
and to follow up, it is the branch owner (or members of the branch's group for sharing) that has admin priv on that branch (ie, make/delete WA's and sub-branches). The ownership of the placeholders EDITION, STAGING and WORKAREAS has nowt to do w' it, can be left in TS' hands and ignored.

Keep in mind also that you can provide a group for sharing ownership of the branch. That would allow you to use a very generic user to be the owner of the branch.

****, that was quick Dave. . .do you
live
on these boards? ;-)
Anyway, thanks for the answer. That's gonna drive command-line people like me nuts. . . having some user who's been gone for 2 years own these intermediate directories.
By the way, did your 'golden' level Smitty77 get a request for a quote about DevNet from Interwoven? I can only assume that such a sage as yourself was first on their list for quotes.

Should I feel offended that Interwoven didn't ask me for a quote on DevNet? I think I'm addicted - it's a sickness for sure. I monitor DevNet all day long. There, I admitted it. Originally, I was just trying to keep pace with you, but then you sort of disappeared for a while and suddenly I have over 300 posts. Adam came out of nowhere and left me in the dust - I don't think I have a chance in **** of catching up with him. But I think the fact that Adam is the leader in the number of posts says something really good about this site - Interwoven is doing a great job of helping people through this forum. Adam and the other regular Interwoven posters have been such a fantastic help to everyone and deserve lots of kudos.
As far as a quote goes, I'm sure Interwoven would anticipate that a quote from me would most likely be some whining about better documentation and so they must have thought better of asking.
