FormAPI validation failure

We're using FormAPI to validate our DCRs, but we have the following bug with an expiration date field. If the radio button for ComplianceCodeSettings is set to "Not exempt", we want the expiration date field to be required. It works as expected unless a user enters a valid date, saves the DCR but then goes back to the field and deletes the date and saves the DCR again. Thanks for any advice.

Does this code get executed when the form is opened ?

You need to have logic something like

if existing DCR, then run your code you posted.

also sometimes the user tries to get around the validation by entering a space character. you think the field has something, but it doesnt. you might to make your validation more strict ( format validation).

also when do you execute this code? make sure it is executed onSaveValid or sometime before saving the DCR.
