Conditional Output checks in Include Files

I have a couple of templates which when creating the page from the presentation template I would like to check the existence of a dcr variable (or if value is 'null') and I would like to know which presentation template is being used so that I can create an if statement to not include certain information on the output. This would be easier if I did not have includes for the presentation template but where I need to put the if then is in the include file.

Any ideas?
