fixed layout in TS 672

I had come across some limitations with SP Templates in TS 6.7.1(+Sitepub), where the components had to be horizontally aligned.

It was told that SitePublisher 6.7.2 will include fixed layout feature, which provides support for dynamic layout of columns or rows of components. I believe there are still some limitations on how you can align components.

Has anyone implemented Fixed Layouts successfully?
If so, were you able to handle components that were not horizontally aligned? ie., do not fit into distinct rows?

Yes, I have used FAL(Fixed Area Layout)s successfully.

I am not totally clear on the second part of your question. Components were not horizontally aligned? Do you want them not to be aligned or you want them to be aligned? Also you mentioned "do not fit into distinct rows"? Please keep in mind that the basic construct for FAL is a row :-)

Is there a way you can clarify it a bit or perhaps provide a dummy mockup or something?

Precisely what you said. The basic construct for a FAL is a row (unless we use custom layouts and I believe that is discouraged).

It is hard to describe without a diagram, so I tried to put something together - please see attached. In the diagram the 4 components have different rows. Without complex UI trickery, can we implement this using FAL.

My question is - has any of this changed in TS 672 SP1 or SP2?

I would think in your layout that all 4 components are in 1 row and 3 columns, right?

I don't think there has been any major updates to FAL from TS 6.7.2 to TS 6.7.2 SP1. You can always check RN to see if there were any bug fixes or not. TS 6.7.2 SP1 was primarily: Optimost / Analytics Integration + HTML components (that dont require XSL transformation), and a few other items.

Ideally, I do not want to think in terms of rows and columns, and I was hoping the new releases will have something to help. The wireframes I am looking at could be grouped into columns, but not into rows easily - unless you think of the whole page as one row.

If indeed columns are the dominant aspect of your layouts then perhaps it makes sense to have a single row and X number columns and then let components just stack up in each column.

That brings up an interesting question: are you wanting to horizontally align components across columns?

Here's a more realistic and complex wireframe.

I cannot think how FAL can support this requirement without going through a lot of hoops.

To me, it looks like that there really isn't a very rigid structure in the layout. You'll probably need the "free-style canvas" more so than the FALs. Just my thought.

Or perhaps a combo of two would be ideal: in the left-most column, have FAL and in the middle area have the "free-style canvas". Unfortunately you can only have one or the other :-)!
