There is no supported mechanism, not in 6.5 anyway. You can either hack it or make a transition to the (for example)
validating CGI task that'll throw an error and loop back to the group Task, perhaps with 'retainowner' attribute set
to true (or just loop back silently from the external task with the appropriate transition message)

I don't think that customization is yet provided by TeamSite. Although it will be a good feature if we could customize the task screen in workflows somehow.

Well - we did this at one customer setup years ago, where we had the grouptask transition to a cgitask where the cgitask script checked to see if there was a transition comment from the previous grouptask; if there was, the cgitask transitioned to the next step without even opening a window; if there wasn't a transition comment on the previous grouptask then the cgitask opened a window that looked like the [then] interface for entering transition comments and used basic JS code to require N-characters of input before accepting it and transitioning to the next step.

It was a bit convoluted but avoided the problem of looping back to a grouptask which did not have retainowner set to true (if retainowner is set to true, looping back to the grouptask is probably okay)

Caveat Emptor! There is a reason why Fish called it "a bit convoluted". Note that CGI Task will NOT start automatically upon Group Task
transition. The reason is that cgitask has different owner than the (taken) grouptask.

Making it all work seamlessly requires some iwat trigger processing on 'TaskGroupTaken' Event to set cgitask ownership on the fly.
See for example [thread=19705]this[/thread] thread for some discussion. None of that is rocket science though, just some extra coding.

I've already mentioned "silent external task loop-back" with proper transition message as much simpler alternative.
Guess what, either way your Authors will learn pretty soon that Transition comment is mandatory.

I already have an external task been called after the group-task.

Would be a nice idea to make a validating code in the ipl file pertaining to that external task...

If possible.. lemme know how to proceed with this...?

Now if that comment is empty/null, i would like to loop-back to the approve/reject phase... with an alert box stating "Please add a comment"... Can this be done in the ipl file itself or i shud have a seperate cgi for this functionality....?

Please help me on this...

Well - you could have the externaltask be a cgitask instead - which only initializes a window if there is no comment from the preceding task.

Looping back to the grouptask is simple, but probably useless and/or confusing - just have the cgitask provide the prompt for the missing comment from the grouptask (if it was missing) and use that (or the original transition comment from the grouptask) as the transition comment from the cgitask to the externaltask.

Note: In order to do this "right" for a cgitask following a grouptask, you'll need an iwat trigger script that triggers off the task being taken ownership of and fixes the ownership of the cgitask to be the same as the owner of the grouptask (this has been described in detail before - though whether you can find it with the forum search is always questionable).
