The simplest is through css - simply create wrapper divs in both components with same css class specified. In that class you can then specify background properties such as certain color or image.

What if there is a gap between both components?

You can have a page background (color or image) applied to the area across both components, or create another empty component in the gap, and apply same background to it.

There is a slight difference between workaround and solution.
