Reporting in Mediabin
Stu_english
We have tried to use the existing reporting views, but we're finding that they don't perform as needed. In particular, we need to report on groups of assets where some of the reporting data comes from metadata from one asset, and the rest of the reporting data comes from another asset. The assets are associated with each other within MediaBin, but we've not found a way to query the report views in a way that leverages this association.
We're using the Business Objects reporting tool to create these reports.
It looks like we need to develop custom views into the database to be able to query against them to get the data we're looking for. Can additional views be created in this way? In order to do this, we need to know what tables are used in the existing views, and what other tables might have the data we're looking for. In particular, anything that can help us to leverage the associations we've defined would be of great value.
Are there additional reporting tools that are useful or necessary to provide customized reporting?
Thanks,
Stu

I'm having similar problems. Our users have an extensive amount of custom metadata that we need to use for generating reports. In some of the basic reports that I've created so far, the user indicates that the reports contain shortcuts as well as the assets. I'm using a derivitive call from the supplied reporting views - how do I get rid of the shortcuts and only reference the assets?

One of the ways reporting was accomplished pre-reporting views was to write custom scripts using MB API and run them nightly etc. That might be something that you might want to consider.

Regarding the reply from msrinivas:
Can you elaborate on what the scripts were doing? Were they doing data extracts from the database? Do you have any examples you could share?
Thanks,

Anything from pushing metadata on MB assets to another database (or vice-versa) to generating and e-mailing reports about expired (or about to expire) assets.
Instead of directly querying the DB and having to change queries any time DB schema changes getting information via API is suggested.
In the versions after which reporting views have been made available querying the DB via the views should be ok too.

Can you be more specific about what you cannot get out of the report views?
Associations can be tracked via the:
ReportAssetAssociation
view. Whether somethimng is a refernce or an original asset can be tracked via the
ReportAssetList
view.

Lyman,
Thanks for the info here, I think there's a few items that can help us with our queries.
One major issue with the reporting views is that they return so much data that we don't need, the response time is prohibitively slow. We're looking into using the views as the basis for an extract into a few dedicated reporting tables that will have just the information we need, indexed accordingly.
Can you see any issues with using the views this way, from an ongoing maintenance point of view? If the views change between releases, is that change clearly documented in some release notes, or a similar document that comes with the release?
Thanks,
Stu

The official answer is "no". The reporting views are considered to have "no user-serviceable parts" and therefore as long as we provide equivalent views we reserve the right to redo the schema.
The unofficial answer is that these tables are pretty slow to change and we could help "fix" them.
That being said I would concentrate on setting up views such as these and if performance becomes an issue adding indexes. This is instead of new tables which would imply triggers.
For future expansion I would like to hear what you end up needing.
