Try Support's search. I remember couple KB Articles describing how to increase Servlet Engine's JVM Memory

Is this causing servletd to require a restart? Does servletd_out actually log a out of memory error? from the message it does seem this is a server side error, but from explanation it does not seem like you are having issues with needing to restart servletd. IF it is, I would monitor the tomcat heap to see what exactly seems to be the issue. IT could be GC issues, or too many processor threads or simply a out of memory error. All of this can be configured. But I would suggest finding root cause to make sure your env. can scale for its usage.

Turn on jvm monitoring so you can see what is going on(this will allow viewing through the ui or you can view iwhome\local\logs\iwui\jvm_stat.log)
turn on jvm logging(FYI I have a FR that will provide a clt to do the same, but for now the url call is the only way) ->

jvm_interval is the iteration time in microseconds for each check.
if you need more info on tuning please provide your env. specs.

our servletd process is hogging memory and causing our TS server to crash 1-2 times daily.

We are seeing the overall memory footprint of this process alone pushing 1.5GB, which would lead us to a fragmentation issue - however, restarting the service should reclaim this, but it doesn't.

if you have lot of proxy redirects configured, then probably you may hit the mentioned issue.
Please have a check from this perspective as well.

yeah we have about 100 lines of proxy mappings configured in iw.cfg - iwov has not mentioned that as a cause/issue tho? what is the workaround?

You may need to debug and check which redirection is consuming resource.
Also check netstat -a for any hanging threads.
