Search and Replace in files

Is there now or soon to be a mass file content "Search and Replace" available to users of CCPro?

We are currently using 6.7.1 but will be upgrading to 6.7.2.

Reading posts back a number of years there was mention that this functionality might be made available. I don't see it - am I just overlooking something?

There is a search/replace for DCRs, but there was never a search/replace for all files.

A search and replace as in "find this value and replace it with the new value" for multiple DCR's? Is this command line driven? I'm not seeing any refernce in the CLT docs.

No it is in the GUI. I do not know of a CLT way to do it.

You may be better off doing a perl script,*though* this is a big gun, don't shoot yourself.

I did a search/replace in a bunch of .page files, screwed things up *really* good. Smiley Very Happy

You have to be obviously cautious when you want to do find/replace across multiple files/ DCR, Datacapture.cfgs, TPLs, etc.

However, if you know what you are doing something like PowerGrep on Windows is pretty handy.

In the past I have also written perl scripts to only change in specific types of files. The perl File::Find module is awesome - the recursive find() function is extremely powerful.

You must be using 6.7.2. Isn't that new for 6.7.2 - and I've read that it is only for "one" dcr at a time - "Search and Replace: Support for searching and replacing content within a single Form in the FormsPublisher interface."

That may be the case, I forgot when it was added. I think your best bet is a perl script.

I, too, need an efficient mechanism to be able to replace a given text string across all the .html, .xml and .inc files (and all files under /templatedata) in a workarea. I was wondering whether I could write a Perl script to (1) invoke Interwoven Search's iwsrchquery command-line tool to find all the relevant files and then (2) update each file found.

Assume TS 6.7.2 SP2 and Interwoven Search 3.1.1. However, if TS and Search are installed on separate boxes, will iwsrchquery, copied from the Search box to the TS box, still work?

Anyway, would using something like grep (or, on Windows, PowerGrep, as someone suggested) be faster?

I tend to brute force the matter. You certainly do not want to use grep (you can write grep in perl that is much faster)

You *could* use the cssdk if you want to write a java app to get the search engine, if this is going to be a truly portable, general purpose app then it may be worth while to do that.

You certainly do not want to use grep (you can write grep in perl that is much faster)

I'd think it would be faster to search across files in a directory using OS commands like find + grep (on UNIX) instead of using Perl to compile a list of files, open each file, read it in and then grep it.

The PowerGrep utility allows one to search AND replace. On UNIX, one could use find + sed.

Anyway, it should be easier for administrators to use Interwoven Search, which should be the fastest mechanism to find files in the TS virtual file system:

1. There should be a command-line tool within TS to invoke Search. (I don't know if iwsrchquery would work in TS if Search were installed on a separate machine; does it?)

2. What's more, the Search engine should allow one to search inside HTML too. For example, if I have an HTML file, the file has "href='/foo/bar.html'" and I'm searching for "/foo/bar.html," Search should find it. Will it? It didn't in my experiment.

So, it looks like I'll fall back on Perl for everything: File::Find to return all files in a workarea, open certain types of files, read them, look for my search pattern and, if found, perform my substitution. What a drag ...

To continue my rant about Interwoven Search:

3. There should be a way to search across languages. It appears that Search 3.1.1 groups unknown-language documents/searches with the default-language (which is English in my case).

So, when using iwsrchquery, setting queryLocale to "un," "any," "unknown," nothing, or even removing this element altogether, has the same effect as setting queryLocale to "en."

I want all documents (including "es" and "fr") at once, regardless of language. How do I get them? Just run Search multiple times, once for each language, right? Actually, if some Spanish documents weren't recognized as such by the Index server, they might be classified as "unknown" and grouped with the English documents. So, just to get all the Spanish documents, I'd have to run 2 queries, one in Spanish and another in English, and then weed out the English documents. Not nice ...
