Significance of Sitemap / default.sitemap

My current understanding is Sitemap tab uses default.sitemap to display nodes.
and also, some Interwoven components linke Breadcrumb use it.

Could someone elaborate on the significance of Sitemap/default.sitemap?

You really need to get some SitePublisher training. This is a key component within SP.

In a nutshell, it defines the sitemap(duh) , all navigation (top nav, left nav), and relationships between pages (i.e. breadcrumbs).

The default.sitemap is never edited, changes are made through the sitemap tab. The default.sitemap is used to push changes through the workflow by having a file to submit/deploy

As i already mentioned, i know about sitemap tab and interwoven components and that they use default.sitemap. default.sitemap file has a simple and intuitive xml structure but yes i agree, it is Not Recommended to edit it manually.

The query really is :
1. Would like to know specific details on how Sitemap is a "key" component?
2. What all Teamsite Product Lines are based on it?
lets say, has 'Targeting' any dependency on SiteMap. etc
3. How does sitemap fit into 'big picture' ?

At the highest level, sitemap could be used to provide different user-experiences for different users in different segments -- think about micro-sites type of concept. It could also provide your internal business users with direct control over site navigation, SEO friendly "aliases", etc.
