On form init you should make it an inline callout in the DCT rather than use formapi & call server.

you have to use an inline command with an item. if you don't want the item, then you just set it to invisible in your init(). what are you trying to achieve?

Inlines can be for an item (like a list of options) or for a number of options, even a complete DCT

i assumed he meant using it in datacapture.cfg as a command without having it inside an item. i might be wrong...

I want that at the time of form init,i need to call a file which read the information from the other xml file and set all the required info of xml file to a hidden(In the form of key and values--There may be many hidden values avaialble in the form as key and value) and on Item change I need to display the hiddens fields.

inlines are for dynamically including / creating form elements when the DCT form is initialized - not for dynamically hiding/exposing/making read-only fields that exist within the form on initialization.

FormAPI is for doing the latter and not the former.

It sounds like you want a combination of the two - which is fine.

One more question can I add the item in the form of Values and Key.

I have an Item Failure Message in .cfg with value “Invalid message” ..can I add the key for this Item?

it sounds like you just want to get a list of options onformload and then use those options as you need. these are the two ways i can think of:

1) use inline command just like you would to build list of options for an item. then set that item to invisible. then use item.getOptions() to save those options in a global array and use it wherever you need it ( adding new item, replicant...)

2) use callServer() to build the list of options using your perl script. then call a javascript function to save those options as an array and use them as you wish. the only thing to remember here is that you cant make multiple callServers in row since callServer() method is asynchronous. learn more about this and see example in formapi dev guide page 32.

there are many ways you can acheive what you need, you just need to try what the developers suggest on here and come back with reason why thier suggestion didnt work so we can better understand what you need.

I do not believe that FormAPI will override a hard-coded hidden field - I think you need to put the logic of what fields to hide/expose completely within FormAPI and not within the DCT configuration file.
