Get current active user in CSSDK

I am trying to capture the current logged in user in the CSSDK for one of my email tasks in a workflow. I want to be able to display the user who is acting on the task, who may or may not be the owner of the task. Within the Java code for the task, I have the line:

 
String activeUser = getClient().getCurrentUser().getFullName();

But this keeps returning the task owner and not the person who is logged in and acting on the task.

Is there another way to get the currently logged in user? Why is this way not working? According to CSClient, it represents the active session.

I assumed that, from his question, the idea was some master, say smitty-loser went ahead and acted on the task while someone else was the assigned user.

You have to forgive Smitty, English was not his first language - so the question may not be too clear.

Such harsh meanies out there. Yes I want to be able to get the currently logged in user (the person with the Master account who is acting on the active task. I thought I spelled it out pretty well.

I am getting the CSClient instance from the execute method of the class that extends CSURLExternalTask. So I suppose that means the client is pointing at the owner of the task? That sort of makes no sense to me as the CSClient is defined as the current session, and I would think the session is the person who is actually logged in doing something. But what do I know?

The actual method that I pulled that line of code from in the first post is buried levels deep in the subclasses. It would be difficult to show how the code traces from the origination of the CSClient object to that line of code.

So if the Client is pointing to the task owner, how do I reference the person actually logged in acting on the task? There must be a way...I'm not seeing it, though.

i think if you are using the CSClient object passed to the task, you will get task owner.

try to create your own CSClient and see what user info you will get. something like this:

Yes that is exactly right. We have a usertask where a user can choose to go back to the beginning of the workflow or cancel the workflow (end the job). If the user chooses to end the job, an email gets sent out with the name of the person who cancelled the job. So if a Master goes in and decides to cancel a job (not the task owner), we want to be able to show in the email that it was the Master who did it. Make sense?

Is this being run on a TeamSite server as a sort of UI or functionality enhancement or is it its own application? Either way, I don't think the getCurrentUser method of CSFactory is going to give you what you want since you don't really want the current user for that CSClient, you want want a way to get the CSClient for the user that is doing something to a workflow, so you can get their information from it. At least as far as I understand your scenario.

You indicated using a method "getClient()" in your original post. From where are you getting this? A parameter of the execute() method? I am assuming you are implementing your own MailNotificationTask. Maybe I am wrong. Let me know. Seeing the classes might be helpful if you do have a bunch of your own implementations.

Sure, but I bet he'll get a session for NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM or root (I am not sure about 'nix) of that server. The javadocs are poor in that they only say "Gets a CSClient object for the current user running the program." leaving it up to the user to find certainty around what "current user" and "program" actually mean.

The javadoc is easier to interpret for some implementations vs. others. It seems to make more sense for people that implement the CSSDK to build their own rich app, running as a client / on another server versus someone implementing some workflow classes in the same Tomcat instance to extend TeamSite functionality.

I usually use "iw.csclient" request attribute to get user invoking a servlet, and I [color=#0000bb]use "factory.getClientForCurrentUser( Locale.getDefault())[/color]" to get the user "Interowven TeamSite UI" when running cutom programs/web apps. i just wanted him to try it since this is a workflow program and maybe it will run as the user logged in instead of iwui user.

Dave - If you haven't given up on this, let me know. I'd like to keep looking at it but not if you're abandoning your approach. There has to be a way to do what you need. (How many times have I found myself saying this?)

It might also be helpful if you send pertinent code if you've implemented your own classes for the task in question.

if it was servlet then iw_client request attribute will do it. if it was just a java class, please share it and i will experiment with it from my end too.

I'm attempting to attach a zip file with the pertinent code (the class hierarchy that goes up to CSURLExternalTask). The class I am working in is named Cancel NotificationTask, which extends MailNotificationTask, which extends WCMTask, which implements CSURLExternalTask.

I'm talking about the code you have that that's giving you the CSClient that prompted you to start this forum thread in the first place. The code from which you got this snippet:

that I'm assuming is your own implementation of an email task. Or maybe some other kind of task.

What you need to do next is determine the reason you're not getting the CSClient object you expect. Is it the way the underlying implementing classes in the CSSDK work? Or is it something in your code?

And for what it's worth, if there's nothing unusual about your code, then it would work the way you would expect it to and you wouldn't even be posting about it in the first place. Smiley Happy

The WCMTask class is where getClient() is defined. The CSClient instance is passed in to the execute method in WCMTask, which is simply implementing the execute() method whose signature is defined in the CSURLExternalTask interface. So I assume based on what everyone has said that the CSClient instance I have is an instance of the task's CSClient, which is apparently the owner of the task.

It seems a little ridiculous that it would be this hard to get the current logged in user's info. One would think that there would be a hook, and it would be obvious. But this is Interwoven we're talking about...
