Simple Archiving Process

I've seen several threads on this subject, but noone seemed to have actually answered the question.

I need a simple way to archive existing HTML and other types of files from a subdir. in one workarea. The content is currently "live." The plan is to delete the content and just keep it in an archived dir., and only accessible thru ContentCenter.

I was planning on copying the files to the archived dir. and deleting the current dir. which will delete the files from prod. What happens to the editions ?

You're asking for someone to provide you a finished design for a customized solution to an issue for which the requirements are very much customer-specific.

Nothing happens to editions unless you delete them yourself.

Thanks, I guess. It was presumptuous and naive of me to use this forum as a medium to exchange ideas. It must be the sign of the times when I can't get a straight answer for a very simple question. It's bad enough that Autonomy would charge for this kind of info since it's not addressed on their Support site.

If you're looking for more than that then it's up to you to better detail what it is exactly you're trying to do. You're original post was lacking in detail both in your requirements for the task you're trying to do and the environment you're working in (TeamSite Version, OS). I would say do some research and try out your idea first and if it doesn't work then describe what it is you're doing (or trying to do) and what errors you're having. Most likely you'll get a better response in the future.

Mea culpa. Let's start this again. I'm on Solaris 9 using TS 6.5 SP2. I need to manually archive a single dir. called "images" that has only *.GIF and *.JPG files w/in a workarea called "current_wa." The "images" directory is currently "live." The "images" dir. is no longer needed.

What's the simplest way to do this ? I have some ideas, but wanted feedback from the community.

I would suggest looking into Editions.

You may also want to try this (it should work, but i have never done it)

Create a sub branch caled archive from the latest edition. New workarea. In the WA remove all non-archived content. In the parent branch remove the archive content.

It may be easier to just create a blank archive branch and use copy to to archive, then delete,

You weren't actually exchanging ideas - you were asking for validation of a vastly over-simplified requirement - which contains dangerous presumptions on both sides of the equation. As was pointed out the simple question did get a straight answer.

When you say "archive" - are you wanting to store just the latest version of each file or all historical versions of the files (true, this doesn't usually apply to images, but if you're using the image files as a simple example you need to figure out your requirements for other non-image files as well).

This is probably your simplest, and likely best, plan of attack:

It may be easier to just create a blank archive branch and use copy to to archive, then delete [from original branch]

You should do some serious testing of it though to make sure it meets your full requirements.

BTW, kudos to Nipper. You gave me an excellent suggestion that did answer my overly simple question. It also validated my own approach.

Fish, you're a wise sage, but lighten up a little bit. I was trolling for an easy answer. And stop wearing your consultant hat once in a while.

So, here's the original question :

The following solution was validated by Autonomy's tech support:

1) Publish an edition of all the subdirs/files w/in the dir. that you're about to archive. This will baseline the archive.
2) If space is not an issue, archived content can be kept in the repository, and accessed with ContentCenter. A bonus since it'll be a lot easier to preview. Create either a sub-branch or an archive workarea. Restrict access to this archive area.
3) Copy content from current dir. to the archive sub-branch or workarea
4) Delete content from current dir.
5) All editions of the deleted dir. will still be kept under the TS "Editions" dir.
