info needed regarding textarea with Visualformat editor

Hi guys,

I am trying to provide a chars left kind of a feature for all the textareas included in my DCT. The exact requirement was to keep updating the Chars left field with the amount of characters the user can type in the textarea. Which I did using the below code.

var txtAreaTerms = top.document.formframe.document.getElementsByName("News/Content/termsCondition")[0];

But the problem here is, for the textarea with VFE, I am unable to do getElementsByName. Which is because I do not see any textarea tag when I do view source.

Please let me know if anyone has faced this issue before?.

I am working on Teamsite 6.7.1 SP1 on Solaris 10.

You passing in XPath style element name for document.getElementsByName? I am not sure if that is that even valid unless you that is the real name of your element and not XPath.

Please clarify your use case a little bit better with emphasis on what you are wanting to do rather than how you are trying to do it.

As per your comment, it is not the Xpath, it is actually the name that appears for the textarea element when I do view source.

The problem I am facing is that, I don't see any textarea element when I do view source for the textarea that have VFE in the DCT.

I don't have an answer - but rather a follow-on question which comes into play with VFE textareas (where you say you are having problems): Do you count the formatting directives in your character count?

I.e.:

Obviously this gets more complex as you allow for more formatting (e.g.: tables, colors, fonts, etc.)Also - if you are dealing with a multi-lingual site - the number of characters for English is not necessarily the same as it is for Spanish, French, German, Chinese, etc.
