Showing <readonly> when it is a new DCR

How can I display a Readonly value to the user in the DCT when they are creating a new DCR (not editing).
The value I wish to show is set from a callout and it is important that the user can read it but not edit it.
If I use <readonly> then I just get '(No Value was entered)'

In 5.5.2, you can do this with FormAPI, which can set the value of an item and set the item to be locked.

Pre-5.5.2, you must use a callout, which can set a <readonly>'s value.
