Include Perl Functions in PT

abiondo

I am trying to build one perl file which includes a function I need to use on multiple presentation templates. Can someone point me in the right direction for how to create one perl file and reference the single file as an include, so I can make changes to the perl functions once and have everyone realize the benefit.

I am using presentation template includes for breaking up my PTs. This doesn't seem to work for the perl files.

Any help you can provide is much appreciated.

thanks,
Anthony

Hi,

Pl check the belowcode which may give some solution.

my $file='/usr/iw-home/iw-perl/bin/iwperl ../../perlfile.pl $inputVariableForFunct' ;<br>

"$file" holds the output of the perlfile.

Hello abiondo,

Have the perl written as a module (save the perl file with a ".pm" extension and under $iwhome/iw-perl/site/lib) something as below.
package mod_name;

use TeamSite::Config;
use DBI;

sub func_here
{
......(code)
}
And you can refer that module's functions in any PT you want, as you would do in a perl script.

abiondo

Thanks for your replies. I am not great with Perl and just a beginner. I am looking for something similar to the way you can include TPL files.

For example

The Perl I have right now is for modifying text prior to generating the PT. If I could put this in a central place and just included it on all of my templates that would make everything a little easier.

nipper

You need to make it a perl module. As you work with TS you tend to build up JS libraries and Perl modules and it kind of keeps growing.

Jamik

what nipper and others have said. just take the functions you want and put them in a .pm file and then you just reference the pm in your PT.

We have a pm that writes out the header section of the files generated by the PT:
use Pioneer::IWTemplating;

iwpt_output( Pioneer::IWTemplating::GetHeaderXmlPreview( iwpt_get_dcr_name(), iwpt_get_flag_param( '-oprefix' )));
And BlueWhale lists what you'd need in your pm file. We've created several pm files over the years to help us do commonly performed tasks.

Awesome - Here is where I am a little confused. Do I leave package in the definition or is that the Package Name and then StringManipulation the module name. Below you referenced

use Pioneer::IWTemplating;

What is Pioneer
What is IWTemplating
Is GetHeaderXmlPreview the sub?
use Pioneer::IWTemplating;

iwpt_output( Pioneer::IWTemplating::GetHeaderXmlPreview( iwpt_get_dcr_name(), iwpt_get_flag_param( '-oprefix' )));

package StringManipulation;

use TeamSite::Config;
use DBI;

nipper

you create a folder in iw-home/iw-perl/vendor/lib called Pioneer and have a file IWTemplating.pm. GetHeaderXmlPreview is the sub

What you posted is pretty close to a perl module, but at the very end should be:

1;

ISCBorisB

"Pioneer" is an arbitrary Folder name, Company, Project whatever
Do the following (I used 'AmeriHealth' as an example, change to what you want):

Makes sense?

nipper

Bo corrected me on the location, vendor/lib may get overwritten with new installs according to Interwoven

nipper

Also, there are multiple ways to use Perl modules.

You have been shown the easy way. But you can instantiate a PM into a variable (if your PM was written to behave that way),

something like:

use MYCO::Utils;
my $Util = MYCO::Utils->new();

$Util->debug($debugfile,"Something");

In this case MYCO::Utils has (at least) 2 subs, one called new, the other is debug.

You will see a lot of the TS PMs behave this way.
