Deleting files: special characters in filename

We are having some issues with deleting files within TeamSite that have special characters in the names. We do not normally use special characters in filenames. However, this one slipped in before the character was discovered. We cannot delete it from the staging areas thru workflows or otherwise.

Example: PhotonìUserManual.pdf

TeamSite will not let us delete this file because of the “greek mu” or ‘micro’ character. Does anyone have a solution to removing this file?

Did you try deleting it in the native filesystem outside of TeamSite?

If that doesnt work, you'll have to try something messy like

1. create a new empty workarea and copy over all files excluding the culprit from the directory it lives in.

2. submit with overwrite.

But if you are having problems deleting non ascii characters theres probably more to it...
TS bug?.. or simple encoding mismatch somewhere... browser.. os...

How exactly did you try to delete this file? Which version of TeamSite are you using an on what OS?

I don't know if this is obvious to you, but you can't delete any files directly from STAGING. You need to delete the file from a workarea and then submit the change.

If you are on UNIX, and if you can't "rm" the file, one trick is to run "rm -i *" in the directory containing the offending file. Then "rm" will prompt you for each file before deleting it. You can say "no" to all files except the one with the funny name. Note that this trick is not TeamSite-specific. But it should work in a TeamSite file system just fine.

If you are on Windows, then I'm sure the file could be deleted in Windows Explorer.

We are using TS 5.0.2 SP1 on Windows 2000.

Yes, I know that we cannot delete files directly from Staging (in TS or with Win Explorer).

We can remove the file fine from the WORKAREA, but TS doesn't seem to recognize the file in STAGING when we try submit the workflow with overwrite.

With this behavior it is unclear to me why TS let this file into STAGING in the first place.

Did you try to do a View->List Modified and then select the deleted file and do a File->Submit-Direct on it?

we had the same problem. I belive it's linked to some encoding details and how the system reads the special characters, which you can't reproduce at cmd promt when trying to delete them.
try renaming that file in your workarea and then it's easy to delete.
