multi language content integerate with transaltion engine

Hi,
We have a requirement to maintain content in English and French.
We need to integerate with transalation engine and get the required translated content back to Teamsite for French.
We give the English content as a input to the translation engine.

Is anybody worked on this ? if so pls help us by providing any doc or how it is achiveable?

This is something that people have years of extertise working on and does not translate to a sound bite very well. The decision process is rather complicated, depending on the type of content, languages supported, tools being used and other issues. I have been doing mulit language sites and each one is architected very different, depending on the needs of the project.

Basically, they are calling a web service to send the English content. Then another one to check the status of translation and download those contents to Teamsite. The web service is called through perl. So again, as Andy mentioned it all depends on your requirement and design.

This is easily achievable. The setup really depends on what translation engine you are using. The major ones already have connectors that use either web services or workflows to extract the content into the translation engine and then get it back to the right place (branch, workarea) in teamsite.

We are yet to freeze on the Transalation engine(Transaltion.com/Lion bridge are the one we are looking).Suggest good transaltion engine which Interwoven will also support as listed by cesarecastro.

My requirement is to connect through workflow to the translation engine and get the content back to the to corresponding French content folders.

As cesarecastro has implemented this and says easily achievable.Request you to pls provide details of how achiveing this.I think it will be helpful for us.

The setup of the connector of Teamsite to Translation engine varies by vendor. Of the 3 I used, the longest one took 2 hours.

Each vendor followed a different design which varied from using TS workflows to route translations to setting up their own application to route content on the server which TS runs on.

I never had to develop a connector from scratch but creating a WF to work with a Translation engine would not be an insurmountable or complex task. Especially if you select a true enterprise Translation application.

I guess the moral of the story here is that if you already have a vendor in mind make sure that he can support TS if that is part of your requirements.

If you want more details on how to achieve this you can contact one of the smart consultants in this network or if you need more assistance (I am not a consultant) I can help a bit by providing some feedback on some of the vendors I tested and some input on translation WF (not just TS WF).

C.C. & Amit have given some good advice for the details of how a translation engine hooks up to TeamSite.

However there are a number of broad picture assumptions that you need to look at before even thinking of the integration.

1. do you handle different languages or different languages and cultures (implies currency differences among other things) ?

2. is your translated site a complete copy of the current site ? Or is it a subset ?

3. do you have localized information ? Something only for the French site and no other.

4. are you using templates ? if yes then, what about presentation templates (which often have text that will be displayed, you do not want buttons in English & the rest of the site in French. Do you have URLs that need massaging ? If a page links to /en-US/default.html then the translated page should link to /fr-FR/default.html. Do you have other content that should not be translated in the templates [I have a field for URLs called LinkType - with a value of Internal or External so I can handle them differently, of course that value was translated until I told them not to].

These are just a few issues I have seen when I have done multi-language projects. My point is that you need to really think this through completely and not focus on the integration but really how the sites will evolve over time.

I cannot provide you with the Translations.com documentation due to the NDAs. My recommendation would be for you to talk to a few translation vendors because each offers a different set of services. You could also speak to one of the experts on this forum like nipper, boris or gotthi.

I can tell you that selecting a translation vendor for your company really depends on your business needs. The technical implementations that I have done with Translation.com, Lionsbridge and Transware have been simple and supported enough to not raise any major red flags for any of these vendors. The hardest part of a project like this is defining the scope, cost, business requirements, workflows, and getting the required support from your management.

You Questions:

1. Pls provide details about TS integrating with Transalation.com

2. How about attached images/flash etc also will be translated by the engine?
Images: We extracted the text in the image and sent if trough translation.
Flash: Text in flash should me in an XML. Content in XML files can also be translated.

3. Level of customization required.

I couldn't agree more, don't get too caught up in the integration of an engine in your workflows. My last project had to handle n languages, and we had to deal with a wide range of issues, from the text itself (like arabic encoding, right to left flow, etc.) to a dynamic presentation layer that was intelligent enough to handle common/dynamic elements. There was several factors to consider (toggling, URLs, common elements, cultural differences, etc.). Plan very carefully - the devil is in the details.

On a side note, as a francophone I've never been satisfied with any translation engines. There are subtle differences between French (Canada, Europe, etc.), none of which seem to be well managed by these tools.

I couldn't agree more, don't get too caught up in the integration of an engine in your workflows.

No question, we support 13 different languages/cultures. I still have not integrated it into the workflow and am not certain if I will. I still have not figured out theexact model that I would like & the manual process I have (the translation engine pushes content to the appropriate branch & sends an email then the user pushes when ready), is certainly not onerous.

On a side note, as a francophone.....

With the thread, i am not able to get the answer. I am reiterating pls correct me if i go wrong.

1. I need to call a web service of a translation organization which will return the translated content in the form of xml/object.
2. Using custom code we need to place the content in the DCR.

Does teamsite provide any module or service for translation of the website?

I believe the answer to the last question is "no" - but it provides a framework / tools that one can use to create such a service if desired - and I believe there are several translation service vendors out there that have developed interfaces for working with TeamSite (or at least have some experience working with customers who use TeamSite)

Teamsite 7.3 provides out of the box translation workflow that you can customize to suit your needs. We have SDL worldserver which different options.
