Access MS SQL DB from Teamsite 6.7.2. on Linux

The requirement is to access MS SQL 2005 database in Template to populate the dropdown.
The env:
Teamsite 6.7.2 on RH Linux

I am not sure how to install and use the DBI: Smiley Surprised

DBC module here.
also what are the other steps involved?
do I need to isntall ODBC drivers on linux?

Was the event subsystem configured to work with the SQL server ? Then you have JDBS access

look at iwhome/eventsubsystem/conf/jmsconfignew.xml

I have ./vendor/lib/DBI/W32ODBC.pm

trying to access MS SQL in teamsite template via callout IPL.
my eventsubsystem is configured for oracle DB.
I saw on couple of other thread that it is needed to load DBI: Smiley Surprised

DBC module and then load the ODBC driviers like unixodbc .

not sure how to do all that.
it will be great to have inputs if anybody has done that.

If I remember correctly, if you are just using generic ODBC calls for querying / executing statements - you don't need to compile / use any other module besides the base-class "DBI". I suggest you try out some of the examples and/or create your own simple examples using just the base class and see if it works before worrying about installing additional DBI and/or DBD modules.

I had tried all the basic steps earlier but seems there is few more things needed to make it work on linux.
Here is one of the link I found listing all the steps needed.

Opened up a support case with IWOV and they could not help.

Here is their reply,
Unfortunately, DBI/DBD installations is not something we officially support since it is not part of the TeamSite produce and we don't have the expertise in this area to provide complete support for this subject.

all I am trying to do is to connect to MS SQL 2005 database in IPL on TS 6.7.2. RH Linux server.
has anybody done this?..please comment...

I am now able to install the DBD-ODBC drivers.

But I am facing another error while trying to connect to the MS SQL database in my perl script.
The error is:

Hi. I had a similar requirement to connect to MS SQL and Sybase from Solaris. I was able to get this to work using FreeTDS and the DBD Smiley Frustrated

ybase module. If anyone is interested, I can send out details of how I got this to work.

I spent several days trying to figure out how to access MS SQL and Sybase from Teamsite on Solaris using perl.

Here are the steps that I used.

Software Versions:

1) Solaris 10
2) Sybase 12
3) Teamsite 6.7.2
4) Latest stable release of freetds, version 0.82
5) DBD: Smiley Frustrated

YBASE version 1.07
6) DBI version 1.38 that ships with Teamsite

Install FreeTDS.

0) Download the latest stable release from http://www.freetds.org/ and unizp/untar the file. cd into freetds-0.82 (this is the latest version as of April 22,2009).

1) ./configure --with-tdsver=8.0 --prefix=/usr/local/freetds

2) make

3) make install

Install DBD: Smiley Frustrated

YBASE using Interwoven Perl

0) Download DBD: Smiley Frustrated

YBASE 1.07 and unzip/untar the file. cd into the DBD-Sybase-1.07 directory.

Interwoven TeamSite 6.7.2 uses an older version of DBI which apparently does not work with the latest version of DBD: Smiley Frustrated

YBASE. In order to compile and use the DBD: Smiley Frustrated

YBASE perl module, I had to download version 1.07 of the module.

While I could have upgraded the DBI version, I wasn't sure what effect upgrading Interwoven's version of DBI would have on the rest of the system to I opted for using an older version of DBD: Smiley Frustrated

YBASE.

To find the version of DBI:

export PATH=/opt/local/iw-home/iw-perl/bin:${PATH}
perl -e 'use DBI; print $DBI::VERSION,"\n";'

1) Use Interwoven's perl:

export PATH=/opt/local/iw-home/iw-perl/bin:${PATH}

Change directory location above to match your installation.

export SYBASE=/usr/local/freetds

This export line is to let the compilation process know where to find the freetds libraries.

2) perl Makefile.PL

3) make

If make fails ensure you are using version 1.07 of DBD: Smiley Frustrated

YBASE (or the very latest version to DBI).

If you get an error similar to the following:

dbdimp.c: In function `syb_init':
dbdimp.c:752: error: `BLK_VERSION_150' undeclared (first use in this function)
dbdimp.c:752: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
dbdimp.c:752: error: for each function it appears in.)
dbdimp.c:756: error: `BLK_VERSION_125' undeclared (first use in this function)
dbdimp.c:760: error: `BLK_VERSION_120' undeclared (first use in this function)

add the following before the first function definition in dbdimp.c

#undef CS_VERSION_150
#undef CS_VERSION_125
#undef CS_VERSION_120
#undef CS_DATE_TYPE
#undef CS_BIGINT_TYPE

dbdimp.c is located in the DBD: Smiley Frustrated

YBASE install directory (i.e. wherever it was untarred)

If you get another error similar to the following:

/usr/ccs/bin/ld: illegal option -- E

use the GNU version of ld provided by the Sunfreeware binutils package instead of /usr/ccs/bin/ld. You can get binuntils from here: http://www.sunfreeware.com/programlistsparc10.html#binutils

If you cannot specify the path to GNU ld (typically /usr/local/bin/ld) instead of /usr/ccs/bin/ld by means of an environment variable or configuration setting when compiling software, you may rename /usr/ccs/bin/ld as /usr/ccs/bin/ld.sun to ensure that GNU ld is used as follows (this is taken directly from here http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/usr_ccs_bin_ld_illegal_option_E.html):

mv /usr/ccs/bin/ld /usr/ccs/bin/ld.sun

Make should now work.

4) make install

After the install, there should be the at least the following files and directories in the Interwoven Perl directory:

/opt/local/iw-home/iw-perl/site/lib/DBD/Sybase.pm
/opt/local/iw-home/iw-perl/site/lib/auto/DBD/Sybase/Sybase.so

5) The Sybase .pod file has notes on how do use the module. It is located here:

/opt/local/iw-home/iw-perl/site/lib/DBD/dbd-sybase.pod

6) freetds.conf -- These are my entries:

#MS SQL Server
[SERVER1]
host = server1.domain.com
instance = test

#SYBASE
[UAT_SERVER]
host = uat.domain.com
port = 16085
tds version = 5.0

A couple of notes about the entries above:

a) I'm using an instance on our MS SQL server so I making reference to it using instance = test.

b) Since I compiled freetds with the option --with-tdsver=8.0 I am overriding it in the SYBASE entry with tds version = 5.0

7) Perl database connect strings

MS SQL Server

my $dsn = 'DBI Smiley Frustrated

ybase:server=SERVER1';
my $dbh = DBI->connect($dsn, 'userid', 'password');

Sybase Server

my $dsn = 'DBI Smiley Frustrated

ybase:server=UAT_SERVER';
my $dbh = DBI->connect($dsn, 'userid', 'password');

Notice that the value for server in the connect string matches the freetds.conf entries [SERVER1] and [UAT_SERVER] in step 6 . This took me while to figure out and seems to cause some confusion as I've read on various newsgroup posts.
