Update DCR through CSSDK/Anything other than Teamsite

We have a requirement to update a dcr without manually logging in to Teamsite and edit dcr and save.

Its actually a webpage where the user want to edit some text. The text underneath has the DCR FULL PATH, Container and the field. We just have to get some way to update the DCR.

Appreciate any valuable ideas.

While the requirement sounds questionable - the mechanics should be reasonably straight forward given that TeamSite provides a file system interface.

I'm not saying it's trivial to implement - just fairly straight-forward in terms of what needs to be implemented.

The assumptions you have made regarding the requirement is exactly right on spot.

We have something like this.

DCR Name (with full path)
DCR Container: DCR Field

Now we need some kind of process to update the DCR with the modified field text.

Post save, we need to regenerate the output file and deploy the content which we can achieve with CLTs.

The problematic part is to update the DCR with the modified field.

If you are not in TS, what / who decides which DCR to update? How do users look through files / browse through pages and decide which page/DCR to update?

We have a preview environment in which the page consists of appropriate data attached. WHen I click on the text it actually opens a CGI file which consists of current text, dcr and the path for the field. I just wanted some communication mechanism to update the perticular DCR with new value....

If you have that DCR Path, field name, and new field value then you can create a CSClient and update the file directly.

Essentially DCRs are nothing much more than XML files with some additional file properties. You can use the CSFile or CSSimpleFile classes in the CSSDK API to read / write to that file. Once you have the file, use a XML parser (i.e. dom4j) to parse and update necessary fields and then update the XML file using methods from CSSimpleFile class.

Nothing like what you've described exists out of the box, all this stuff is a customization coded by somebody.
You (your code) *seems* to generate call-back Parameters and injects Java Script call-backs
activated by onClick Events of certain page components.

So - start with the CGI that you've mentioned and go from there. Where is it configured? If it's a
rendition Environment - re-read Ghoti's post carefully. It shows all steps you'd have to take to make this
rudimentary "Surf and Edit" possible.

If CGI is on the TS Side - you've got lucky. Somebody already made most of the job (request + transport) for
you. You can change DCR directly from this CGI using for example DCR or XML Parser. Alternatively, you can start
(asynchronous?) Perl or Java DCR Modification process from the CGI, etc. After that you would have to re-generate
the Page in question and complete the cycle by issuing "Refresh" request to the original Page.

As noted before - I'm not saying it's trivial, just pointing steps

You may want to take a look at Site Publisher / Live Site Products. Elaborated "Surf and Edit" is one of the OTB Features there

First set local properties , setting path for cssdk.cfg.path,CSFactory and serviceBaseURL.Having done u will create client. U now have access to TS. Use
csSimpleFile.write to update the dcr at your expected vpath.
set external attribures:
csSimpleFile.setExtendedAttributes((CSExtendedAttribute[])arrayList.toArray(new CSExtendedAttribute[arrayList.size()]));
Save , submit the dcr.
Thats it.
