Noob question re: LiveSite functionality

Good afternoon,

I've been mucking about with SitePublisher, and I've been running into some issues. I'm a neophyte with this stuff, so I'm wondering if my difficulties stem from not having LiveSite installed or simply not understanding the product. I see LiveSite peppered throughout documentation and in the server's filesystem, so I would like to know what impediment it is to not have LiveSite installed with regards to the following:

* Component development. Many of the OOTB components require LiveSite, why is that?

* Extending the data model. I appear to be missing some Interwoven packages like com.interwoven.livesite.dom4j.Dom4jUtils and com.interwoven.livesite.dao.DataAccessObject. I presume those would have been added with a LiveSite install? How does not having LiveSite affect using externals?

* Custom layouts for pages and sites. In another thread, someone indicated that LiveSite is required for custom layouts, is that accurate?

If your component has Targeting or any dynamic functionality then you need LS in the target runtime environment. Without that you can generate static HTML (or ASP or JSP) files out from SP .page files.

More than likely dom4jUtils and DAOs are installed even with SP only installs. Under the covers SP has a built-in LS Runtime type application for preview purposes. Externals should work just fine with SP only -- only thing to keep in mind is that your External is not truely dynamic. Without LS, you'll be taking a "snap shot of whatever data" is returned by your External when you generate a static HTML files from SP .page files.

Again, for you to have any dynamic functionality in runtime you need LS. Otherwise your custom layouts will be represented in your generated static HTML.


I would strongly suggest that you search this forum and get a good understanding on the difference between LS and SP. There are quite a few threads that discuss that topic. You may also want to look into some training.
