Determining the Extension Point

Hello Friends,

I am trying to create a new data type in livesite3.1.0 using existing types. In the manual a complete example is given to extend/create a new data type. My question is where we define/mention that we are extending our data type from "Teamsite Asset" or "Content" inbuilt types?

I will really appreciate if someone could put light on this.
