Populate TextBox with Inline Call

System

I'm trying to populate a textbox based on a inline call to my database in order to generate a unique id - does anyone know 1) - if a text box can be populated from an inline call and 2) what is the syntax - the most obvious choice below didn't work:

<text>
<inline command="d:/iw-home/Interwoven/TeamSite/iw-perl/bin/iwperl.exe d:/iw-home/Interwoven/TeamSite/httpd/iw-bin/inline_get_id.ipl"/>
</text>

If you inline is returning the ID text within <default> tags, that should work fine. Note, however, that the text box will have a default value set to whatever you provide, but it will be editable.

The most robust solution is to use FormAPI, which gives you tremedous power and control. It is available with TST5.5.2, in case you happen to already be on that release.

Ok - I still get an error:

Templating Error Page
An internal problem was encountered trying to create a requirements object for type mytest/myfirm.

when I change my <text> tags to <default>

<default>
<inline command="d:/iw-home/Interwoven/TeamSite/iw-perl/bin/iwperl.exe d:/iw-home/Interwoven/TeamSite/httpd/iw-bin/inline_get_id.ipl"/>
</default>

my perl script runs fine from the command line and
returns a unique id - upon each run - I can attach the ipl code if need be - but all I'm returning is a raw numeric number

Please refer to the data capture DTD, and make sure that your datacapture.cfg, after inline substitutions, is valid. You probably want this:

...
<item name="...">
<text>
<default>
<inline command="d:/iw-home/Interwoven/TeamSite/iw-perl/bin/iwperl.exe d:/iw-home/Interwoven/TeamSite/httpd/iw-bin/inline_get_id.ipl"/>
</default>
</text>
</item>
...

You can use the iwdctacleval CLT to see your datacapture.cfg file with its inline callout substitutions made.

OK - I got it working - however it appears that Interwoven
won't let you put a piece of dynamic data into a stand-alone text-box - I can only get this to work if dynamcially create a
select drop down menu - here's my current ipl - what I want is to have the id appear in a plain text box

What exactly do you mean by this? What makes you think that it won't work in a text box?

Why didn't it work inside of <text><default>...</default></text>?

Did you try, instead of this line...
$option_string .= "<option label=\"$array_ref2->[$idx]\" value=\"$array_ref1->[$idx]\" selected=\"t\"/>\n";

this?
$option_string .= "$array_ref2->[$idx]\n";

...I think that should work... if you're just populating a textbox, you don't need <option>. Good luck!

I think the problem is in your code - Your DCT specifies < text>< inline ...>< /text>

Your inline script specifies < substitution>< option ..>...< /substitution>

An item can be either a text or a select

 element - but not both.

OK in my DCT the code looks like this:
<item name="uniquenum">
<text>
<default>
<inline command="d:/iw-home/Interwoven/TeamSite/iw-perl/bin/iwperl.exe d:/iw-home/Interwoven/TeamSite/httpd/iw-bin/inline_get_id.ipl"/>
</default>
</text>
</item>

In my perl script I took Maureens advice - and changed that line

I see the text box on my DCT but it's not filled in with my unique id - it's just blank

Migrateduser

Actually - I got it - the key was to have the tags in the following order:
<substitution><text><default>

not

<text><default><substitution> -

for reference the perl script was from knowledge base artcle:
002152 - where I found this

also the perl script for populating the inline was from 048942

Thank you all for your great help:

It appears the problem with the ordering of the elements was an accident on your part and not in the KB referenced (2152) - unless someone else fixed it before I looked at it.

However, I did just reformat the article so that the code does not appear as one long line of text, and thus should be easier for the next person who references it to see it clearly.

We tried the script mentioned in the KB article 2152. This works only while creating new DCRs. Is there a way to make this work when editing existing DCRs?

In other words, we want to be able to populate the value in a text box or a text area via an inline callout (while editing a DCR) and make it readonly.
