Workflow Modeler Email Task hangs

I am NEW to TeamSite so forgive me if I get some of the terminology incorrect: Smiley Surprised

We have an approval workflow that has been working without any problems, and it has NOT been modified. Today it is not completing, it has stopped on the first EmailTask in the Workflow. The only thing that may be different today is the amount of files being sent at once to that workflow. (48 files)

I found a forum post regarding ExternalTasks and file limitations, and another post that hints the EmailTask may also have similar limitations. I don't see any errors(may not be looking in the right place), it just won’t send the email and complete the workflow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

This kind of problem needs to be properly debugged.
Looking through the log files is the first step. Enabling and/or adding debugging print statements to the code that is being run and then looking for that information in the log files is the next step.

If you are not proficient in such debugging and nobody else there is either - you can always hire a knowledgeable consultant to come in for a couple of days (I can't imagine it taking more than 2) to debug and fix the problem for you.

Well I hope you have someone who can debug it.

While there are issues when external tasks have a large number of files, we are talking in the hundreds or thousands. I have never seen 48 files cause an issue.

You need to try different things and start debugging, there is nothing we can do here without a lot more information

After more digging, it looks like it may not be related to the Email Task and the number of files. We now have several jobs that are not completing, stalled at the Email Task, and some of the tasks have only 1 file! The one common thing between the stalled tasks, they all contain a request to delete a file!?!?

What log file and where should I be starting to troubleshoot Workflow issues?

That would be great information for someone who knows how to debug your system. Unfortunately that is not any of us.

The standard OOTB email client does not have a problem with deleted files. Custom ones can and if they are not properly tested, this results.

You need to know exactly what step is still active (is it the email ?). Then you need to know what is being executed. There are new and old OOTB email tasks as well as many custom ones. From there you should be able to turn debug on and see what is happening.

You can check in iwhome/tmp and iwhome/local/logs/iwui/servletd_out.log to see if anything get s updated when this happens.

You should ask the person who created that custom WF where the logs are. You can try looking into the iw-home\local\logs(\iwui) directory to see if you see relevant information in any of the logs in there.

The iwhome/tmp has a cci directory in it, but no files to be found.

The iwhome/local/logs/iwui/servletd_out.log has multiple WARN entries with
"NodeLinkTag () - unexpected exception in doEndTag null"
and
"TaskContext () - No taskid specified"

The iwhome/local/logs/iwui/servletd_err.log is empty.

The iw-home/local/logs/iwui/error.log file has a repeating error about every two minutes "File does
not exist: E:/iw-home/httpd/webapps/content_center/command".

None of this by itself seem relevant to your problem. You probably need somebody who knows the product / customizations to look at this.

Well you are screwed. Technically speaking.

Whoever wrote the WF did not turn on or include debugging (or if they did, put it *somewhere else*). That is not a good thing.

You have a choice,

keep fumbling.

tell people not to submit deleted files.

see if your boss can get you someone who knows TS well enough to debug this (possibly could be done remotely in a few hours)

You can turn on debug mode by going to the Administration tab on your TeamSite GUI. Under Manage Workflows, look for your workflow. There is a section in the

<model ... >

section that should have debug. Set the debug to true. Then when you start your workflow, there should be radio buttons for debug. Set to true run your workflow and you will see some xml output. It should list the commands that would be started. What is that command?
