Not able to invoke .java from external task in wfm

Hi All,

I am trying to invoke a .java file from the external task in the workflow modeller .

I am specifying the command attribute as :

$IW_HOME/tools/java/bin/javac
$IW_HOME/local/config/custom/test.java

but still the task gets stuck and java is not executed.

Can anyone help me with what am i missing ?

Actually i want to run a java class file from workflow modeller and i dont have any idea on how to do that .

so to start with I was trying to just hit the java file from the workflow modeller .

Follow the below steps
1. Create Custom Java class file
2. Create a JAR for your class.
3. Place the .jar file into the following location:
iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src/lib
4. At the command prompt, navigate to the following folder:
iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src
5. Run make_toolkit.ipl.

Then make changes to the Workflow modeler Workflow task
click task properties using WFM where you want to configure custom java class
Add Variable like this
Key- ClassName
Value- custom_Java_Class_Name with package if exists

refer the workflow modeler guide for more details on this.

You may have to get the .jar file itself in your class path (not just the class name). Also your actual call from your external task should use *java* and not *javac*. If this is becoming an issue, I would switch this out from external task to URL task and you would NOT have to worry about setting any classpaths or anything at all -- will probably simplify things for you.

You shouldn't be invoking .java files... You should be invoking .class file. Most likely, your class(es) should be in jar files and put it in iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src/lib directory. Run make_toolkit.ipl from iw-home/local/config/lib/content_center/customer_src directory.

If you are going to run the class from external task, remember you'll need a main method for entry into your program. If you use url external task, you'll need to set the ClassName task variable,
ie
com.interwoven.workflow.tasks.ClassName

Remember that you'll take down teamsite UI when you run make_toolkit. So it is better to do it on dev server when nobody else is using that server.

Thanks for the help .

I am able to execute the java but still workflow does not go to the next step.

My workflow has 3 steps .

1) Start
2) external Java task ...print a Hi statement .
3) end

workflow is able to print the "Hi" from java but it doesnot end after that .

Can any one help me out what can be the possible reason for that ?

Both errors pointing to the fact that you never declare and initiate your variable named *task*. I would suggest to learn some Java basics first. Also probably having this as a URL Task instead of External Task might make it easier for you.

Again not to say it is not possible with External Task but since you were not able to get the CSTask/CSClient objects I suggested CSURLTask as it'll give you those two objects and you dont have to worry about creating/getting either of them.

CSExternalTask's main method should get following parameters: Job ID, Task ID, Workarea, and Files attached.

1. First step would be to get the CSClient (probably a dedicated client).
2. Second step would be to get the CSWorkflow object using the CSClient and Job ID.
3. Get the CSTask object using the CSWorkflow and Task ID.
4. Do whatever processing you need to do.
5. Using CSTask, you'll have to choose your transition.
