Can't iwcp from EDITION to WORKAREA?

I'm trying to restore some old files using a script but iwcp throws an error:

ERROR:02439: Operation not permitted

The command is this:
$ sudo iwcp /repository/EDITION/20081208/sourcefile /repository/WORKAREA/destfile

Is it not possible to iw copy from an edition back to a workarea?
