TS 6.5 - possible to restrict access to fields based on group
shergar
Hi, we want certain users to be able to have access to certain fields on a form but don't want these fields to be available to general users. Distinguishing by role is too general and by user means we have to make a template change each time we amend the list of users that should have access.
We don't want to do this:
I can't see that we can do what we need to do using TS 6.5. Does anyone know any different or have any suggestions to get round this? (forgive me if I've overlooked something in a manual) thanks.

no easy solutions available, I think.
We have something a bit similar, solved with FormAPI running onLoad, that queries the server (callServer -> CGI) for user information (stored in our case in a dedicated Admin/Users DCR). The FormAPI then does a setReadOnly on all fields (IWItem) not permitted to the user.
If your user information is stored in /etc/group, then you could have your CGI parse that and return appropriately formatted results.

You can maintain this "List Of Users" in some single configuration source like DCR / XML / DB / Whatever or you can use dedicated
TS/OS/LDAP Groups reflecting access rights. Then code DCT inline(s) to parse/get it and inject "allowed" Tags on the fly.
Alternatively, you may generate XML External or Parameter Entities - whatever the source of User Lists.
Then reference XML Entities within your applicable DCTs.

I'll use the perl IWUSER environment variable to find out who the user is and use perl to find out if that user is in an allowed list of users contained in a text file. This is acceptable as we can easily maintain the text file.
Thanks for the replies
