It depends where you would like to extract it,on component ,on template or on page level and also in which environment RUN-TIME or DEVELOPMENT.

Kindly elaborate the requirement,then it would be easier to hunt for the approach.

I like to extract on template in DEVELOPMENT environment , prefer to assign the value of the sitename extracted to some xsl:variable so that I can make use of it such as passing if-condition etc.

In Java External/Controller: RequestContext.getSite().getName()

In XSL directly: <xsl:value-of select="$CONTEXT{site.name}"/>

I haven't tried the latter one myself but it should work directly in the XSL. If it doesn't you can always set the value using Java External and retrieve it from XSL later.

I recommend the Java external. The $CONTEXT route will evaluate correctly, but not until after the XSL is rendered, so you can't use it in XSL conditions. This drove me crazy until I figured it out.

Absolutely -- I was showing how to retrieve the site name. You have to understand when the actual XSL transformation happens and that it is not a variable defined in the XSL. Therefore you cannot use it in XSL conditions but you could use it for display purposes :-)
