extract label of a dropdown field

I've two items in a dcr dropdown field with same value but different labels.
<option value="val" label="field1">
<option value="val" label="field2">

Now, in my tpl, i want to retrieve the label of the item selected in the dcr.

The problem is that whenever i try to extract the label for the item selected (out of the above two), i always get the label of the first one i.e. field1 even if i select the 2nd item(with label-field2).

Is there any way to get the label for the item actually selected??
