Perl Development Environment

Can anyone reccomend a decent tool (IDE) for developing perl in on a NT4 platform.
I know of two
1) Active States offerings (although i am not sure which one would be suitable) http://www.activestate.com/Solutions/Programmer/Perl.plex
2) The openPerl IDE held in sourceforge. http://open-perl-ide.sourceforge.net/

Has anyone currently any experience or reccomendations.

I am currently using UltraEdit which is ok for what it does but am needing a tool where i can step through code and display whats in variables at that moment in time.

I don't know about Perl IDE's - but if you debug your perl by running

perl -d Smiley Tongue

tkdb scriptname [arguments]

You get a pretty reasonable GUI in which you can examine variables and such as you go.

(I believe ptkdb is shipped with standard Perl - I *know* it is shipped with iwperl)

I've enjoyed using Activestate's Komodo IDE. If you've got a fast machine it's well worth the trouble to acquire and set up if you will use it for editing and debugging code. Komodo also comes with a nice regex utility to help create new complex expressions and figure out someone else's.

If you are just interested in debugging, iwperl -d Smiley Tongue

tkdb should be good enough.

unfortunately, due to the nature of IWOV applications, most of trace features any IDE will give you, would be useless.. - Many perl scripts are used in external tasks, workflows, etc, where there are so many real-time environment variables, taht are very hard to replicate/re-create during standalone debugging. Even the user that runs a script will probably different...

Most of the consultants will use some simple logging mechanisms...

I have indeed be reduced to outputing everything to textfiles.

I do however use ultraedit which allows me to run my perl scripts within the editor and has some limited debugging features.

true, this all is Ok, but my point is that I really found it extremely rare when I could use an IDE at its own... Maybe when doing som eexternal tasks stuff...
