is there documentation anywhere that lists (typically) where the aliases used in the PDFs point to on the file system? or a command I can execute to get all those aliases from IW?

example:
iw-home
od-home
runtimehome
etc...

I've searched through the PDFs left by our consultant and I can't find what I'm looking for

iw-home usually refers to TeamSite home directory -- this is selected by the person who installs the product. For example, on a windows machine you could install it at: C:\Interwoven\TeamSite

od-home -- similar to iw-home, this refers to OpenDeploy home directory.

runtimehome -- similar to iw-home, this refers to LiveSite Runtime home directory -- usually on a different server than TS.

As vpatel already indicated, these are environment-specific, based on whomever did the installation.

On Unix, you can look at the contents of files like /etc/defaultiwhome (iw-home), /etc/defaultiwod60home (od-home), and there's probably a similar file for LiveSite's runtimehome.

On Windows you could probably checked the system environment variables (IWOD60HOME) and/or the registry for some of these.

On either system, you should be able to run: iwgethome to get the resolution of "iw-home".

Thanks for the info, if certain variables are configurable upon installation, then where are they configured? We are on a windows installation 6.72.

I just need to know where in any of the documentation it says that "x" alias used in the book examples is TYPICALLY mapped to "y" physical directory and where I can find the config file that sets or overrides this default setting.

I think you are still missing the point. Let me try it again: iw-home refers to where TS is installed on the server. It could be installed at C:\Interwoven\TeamSite on my server versus say that it is installed at C:\Apps\TeamSite on the next server. They are not necessarily configuration -- they are where the products get installed at the install item. At install time, just like any other installer out there you can enter/select/browse which directory you want the product to be installed in. If you selected C:\Interwoven\TeamSite then your iw-home is that directory. I hope this clears it up a little bit for you.

First, I did not install the software, I did not configure it either. We are on a fresh install, no sites are running, no DCT/DCRs, minimal workspaces, 100% wide open access to a limited set of developers. It's 100% fresh, installed in the last week.

I've already figured out where the printed reference of "iw-home" and "od-home" map to on a physical hard drive, that was easy but I included it to make a point, and you've pretty much solidified my point that it is configurable, so how does one know where to look if the book says "iw-home" or someone says "it's in the IW Home directory" and one is sitting at a TS Server they have NEVER seen before and the default/typical location of "[drive]:\Interwoven\TeamSite" is not there? how would you find this information?

I would like to know where "runtimehome", referenced in the printed materials is mapped to on a physical drive. There has to be a way to figure this out without having to remember what was selected/chosen/configured upon install. This information HAS to be stored somewhere or else the application wouldn't work. Is there a folder structure pattern I can look for?

What other "aliases" are typically used in the printed material or on these forums and what folder "patterns" do they map to...

Upon further investigation I found this command:
iwgetlocation -a

This get's me much closer to the type of information I need, but not all. Is there any other commands like the one above that displays the installation configuration details?
