Associating children and parent assets.

Hi,
We are trying to create assets(child assets) which are dependent upon other assets(parent assets). In order to do so, we have defined a specific association type which associates parent and child together.

We are using following webservices in order to find out the asset associations and asset properties.
-getAssetAssociation
-getAsset_GroupMetadata

The problems we are facing are that it is difficult to find out which assets are parent and which are children..

Would be great if we could get some direction on how to differentiate between children and parents...
