2. When you tag a file in teamsite, is this for TeamSite internal Search only, or can these tags be used with third party search engines (google, fast).

It is stored as EAs (file properties). EAs stand for Extended Attributes.

TeamSite can handle metadata (stored as EAs) for variety of things. Some metadata/EAs could be injected into the section of a page (i.e. keywords, description, etc.). Some are strictly for tracking purposes (i.e. last edited by, last edited date, etc.) There are others that are strictly used by the application (i.e. IDs, etc.).

Some metadata could be used to automate things -- for example, if you have a .page file you can have an EA that'll list all assets (i.e. images, DCRs, etc.) that are included in that .page file. So if a user deploys a given .page file, you can look into that particular EA to see which other assets you may need to deploy as well.

EAs can also be used to enhance TS Search.

Keep in mind that EAs are only available within TS. If you need a particular set of metadata to be available outside of TS (i.e. keywords/description in the section for SEO) then you have to account for that.

1. I downloaded a file, and imported it into another location, and the metadata was lost. So i was just wondering is there a way to recover the metadata.

They are physically located in the IWOV backingstore. TS uses a virtual file system with file attributes that you can control.

No they are not in an XML file.

Not without getting it from the original file/version. The good news is that these EAs are versioned, so if you submitted the file you can get them.

That is common with TS Forms Publisher, I have to think you can do it (maybe with some custom coding to the workflow) for SP.

If you want to get the EA, you can use DataDeploy or a script to read and write an XML file

By default EAs are NOT accessible via physical file. You have to look at File Properties. You can use iwextattr CLT or CSSDK API to get the EAs and do whatever you need to do with them -- inject them in the HTML head section, publish them to a DB, etc.

To answer your second question: tagging SP page and getting that information into the generated .html file would be a customization -- it could be a bit tricky depending on your requirement. There are variety of ways to do it -- each with its advantages and disadvantages. In order to figure out which alternative is best for instance, you'll have to look closely at your requirement + your architecture / setup + other factors in your implementation.

With that said, since you are trying to find out something as trivial as EAs, I would recommend you go through the product manuals thoroughly and / or get some external help. That is if you want to have a solid solution in place that you wouldn't want to re-do 5-6 months down the road.

In fact, recently I did exactly that -- retrieve SP page's EAs and inject them into the <head> section of the generated HTML file .... Smiley Very Happy
