Custom Lookup Dialogs not handling existing values

I am trying to use the custom lookup dialogs as shown below but when I specify the existing selections using the "IManExt.SelectedString.LookupString" context item (as described in the "Creating Custom Commands in WorkSite" help file) the custom lookup dialog does not show my existing selections.

ContextItems items = new ContextItemsClass();
items.Add("ParentWindoxw", parentHandle);
items.Add("IManExt.SelectionDlg.Object", db); //db is an IManDatabase object
items.Add("IManExt.SelectionDlg.MultipleSelection", true);
items.Add("IManExt.SelectionDlg.ShowEnabledOnly", true);
//InitialSelection is the exact string containing the results from a prior lookup
//(that were contained in the IManExt.SelectedString context item on the previous lookup dialog call)
items.Add("IManExt.SelectedString.LookupString", InitialSelection);
items.Add("IManExt.Refresh", true); //not sure if I need this -- doesn't help though

Custom1LookupCmd c1 = new Custom1LookupCmdClass();
c1.Initialize(items);
c1.Update();
if(c1.Status == 0)
c1.Execute();

After the Execute call, I get the dialog, but none of the values are selected. Note it does work properly in FileSite. I am using version 8.5 of the SDK.

Note after hijacking the custom1 lookup on the search screen I discovered I should be setting:

items.Add("IManExt.SelectedString", InitialSelection);

and possibly also passing an array of selected objects. However I found that even in the worksite seach dialog this doesn't work.

Just to clarify I would like the hijacked custom dialog to already have the selected items moved to the bottom "selected" box on the lookup dialog when using multiple selections (as in a search).
