DCR is not generating using template

When we are trying to create an html document with a template, the file fails to generate and an empty file with size zero is being created. No DCR is created for the file.

This problem is occurring very rarely (once in 6 months) and randomly. Immediately after facing this problem if we create a new file with a new name and same content, it is created successfully. We have checked the application log and find no error message.

Below are our TeamSite details:

TeamSite Version: 6.5.2

OS: Windows 2003

Can anybody please suggest what the problem might be?

DCRs are not [normally] "generated" - they are "saved" from an Edit session that utilizes the DCT to create a form into which the user will enter input. After the DCR is saved, then one can Preview or Generate a page from the DCR using a [Perl-based or XSLT] PT.

Are you saying that you are using some non-standard mechanism to "generate" DCRs? Or that your attempts at saving a DCR that is being created is failing? Or that the DCR gets saved but with no content? Or something else?

You may need to post your DCT (as an attachment) in order for anyone here to properly help you - along with the corresponding snippet for the DCT in your templating.cfg file (properly formatted to display correctly in the forum)

Yes, agreed. DCR is saved and then you generate the page to get a preview.

For us it is actually that the DCR is being saved with no content and then when we click generate and browse to the correct folder and give a filename and when we click “ok”, system gets stuck and it gives a blank page. So, the only option is to start all over again, so we clicked “Cancel” and started from scratch. Now, when we enter all required information in DCT, save it (a meta data screen appears and saves metadata) and on saving it again a DCR is created and we can now browse to the folder where we were supposed to save it with a filename, we can see that the previous attempted file was there in the list, but it was locked and file size zero. When we try to select that one and save it with same name and replace it, no luck, the system is stuck again. So, we started for the third time, given the file another name and this time it went through and we were able to publish it.

Hmm - okay, the part which I was interested in (the "type" of DCT and the way it was written) seem to be aligned correctly (it is type "xml" and the DCT is correctly written with location and pathid attributes) - an inconsistency there is a common source of the kind of problem you indicated.

The rest of it you'll just have to debug a bit more. Here are some steps I'd recommend trying:

Try to be as systematic as possible, keep notes of what you're doing so that you can back-things out, etc. to try to diagnose the source of the problem.I'm assuming that you've already ruled out permission issues and disk-space limitations.

Because the code is untouched and everything seems to be ok since a long time.

Could it be the problem of system getting stuck could be related to the performance of the TS server?

Could it also be that the user must have clicked on save (for auto-dcr creation), even while the system was trying to save the metadata. So, the delay has actually caused the system to get stuck? Some kind of synchronization issue?

May be a TS upgrade to a higher version 6.71 would help!

Almost anything is possible, but if you don't know what to focus on as the source of the problem, the best thing to do is take it apart and reconstruct it piece by piece until you can isolate the portion of code which seems to cause the issue. Then you spend more time working on that piece of isolated code to understand what it is / is not doing so that you can fix the problem completely.

I've seen implementations that worked for years due to a quirk, and that then stopped working - once the code in which the quirk was being taken advantage of was fixed, the code worked reliably.
