Getting workareas quickly

I am working with TS 6.7.2 SP2 on Windows.

I have a portlet that consists of a servlet and a JSP. The initial load must provide a list of workareas for the user to select from.

I can get this by:

Get all branches
For each branch, get all workareas for the user
For each workarea, skip if (arbitrary reason), else add to list

This works, but it takes 4-6 minutes if you have a lot of workareas (like 100+).

However, in ccStd there is the "My Workareas" portlet that doesn't suffer from this slowness issue.

So, am I getting the workareas in a stupid way?

Could I somehow access that list of workareas in my portlet? If so, any ideas how?

Nope. That sounds like how I would do it...not that that's any indication of excellence!

Two questions.

- Are you sure the slowdown is happening in getting the workareas?

- What method of CSBranch specifically are you using in step 2 above? getWorkareas(), getWorkareas(CSUser owner, java.lang.String query, int offset,int maxElements) or getWorkareasForUser(CSUser owner, boolean recurse)

I use the second version, mainly because I hadn't figured out what a query looks like. Once I do that I can test that version, too.

Just for grins, write a perl script to do that and run it on the server (you can post it here for suggestions). Time it to see how long it takes.

I do some significant searches through call servers that take 10-15 seconds. Nothing that takes 5 minutes.

If you see a significant improvement by running it in perl, then see if you can make it a CGI.

It is.

It was closer to 6 minutes on our virtual test server. On the pilot server, which is our old physical production hardware, I was down closer to 4 minutes. Still way too long.

The frustrating thing is that the information is sitting right there in another portlet, yet I have no idea how they get it so fast, or how to access it and avoid this whole issue all together.

I'll take a stab with the perl version...although after looking at the docs for the perl modules again...I didn't see anything that looked helpful...

- By second version do you mean the zero argument method?
- When you said 100+ workareas, do you mean per branch or total?

To continue the debugging fun, I would try getting the CSPlaceHolder below the branch ( getWorkareaPlaceHolder() ), then use the getChildren() method from CSNode on that to get your array of CSWorkareas. Then iterate through those, adding logic to get the applicable workareas.

Finally, I'd be remiss as a devnet contributor if I didn't ask for you to post the applicable portion of the code where you're trying to get the workareas.

Most folks here aren't going to laugh at your code as long as you don't expect them to do your work for you and you're willing to discuss suggestions. There's code that really works and code that just works, and sometimes just works is good enough. So it's all good. But I digress...

There is actually a bonafide zero-arg getWorkareas() method of CSBranch. I only bring this up because I've found that getWorkareasForUser(CSUser,boolean) doesn't really do what I'd want it to do. For example, let's say a user is NOT the workarea owner or part of the "group for sharing", but is part of a group that has access to the workarea by way of a role that allows "View and modify files in workareas where they are not a member of the group for sharing." In this case, the method does not return what you'd expect. Maybe this applies to you, maybe it does not.

What I'd do to keep testing is take all the logic (most specifically the regular expression stuff!!!!) out of the method to try and isolate if the problem truly is with using the Interwoven's API to get the workareas. I can't say surely, but I am guessing it is not.

You'll have to tweak this to fit your method sig., but try something simple like this and then build up logic from that point (not compiled or tested):

Hey Craig, try running this perl script on your server & see how long it takes:

On my VMWare instance on a laptop, it takes a couple seconds to go through 4 stores, about 20 different branches.

Thank you for the suggestion!!! My initial testing shows ~ 20 seconds for getWorkareas() and my code (using getWorkareasForUser(CSUser, Boolean) is still up around 6-7 minutes. BTW that's for 1600+ workareas

In my case, I think this will be OK, since I don't know that I need ONLY workareas owner by a user.
