Change DCT path without losing data?

Due to a content requirement change, I have to edit the path of an item in a DCT.
It is not currently in a container, however, i must now add another item that will be a choice. By placing both in a container, i will nest the original item one level lower. Thus, orphaning all of the content in the repository that is bound to that item. When the users edit a dcr, the field will be blank.

I'm sure i'm not the first person to encounter this. Is there a best practice for how to handle this?

You can write a perlscript, that will browse the data folder, pick up each dcr inside it and then do a string replacement, addig that extra that you've inserted in your dct now.

What's to fear - this is the kind of fun stuff that one doesn't get to do nearly enough of these days - creative programming.

And yes, a program (Perl, Java, etc.) that uses either regex or XML parsing, is the best way to avoid loss of data in DCRs whose DCT has changed.

Also - you will need to update the PTs, and any FormAPI code you have that access the relocated data.
