Newbie: associating generated files to workflow

I would like to associate the files generated by applying a TPL against a DCR that is already part of a task to that same task, i.e., make it part of the same workflow.

Does this require custom scripting in the workflow itself?

If this is a requirement, to people typically make the generation an automatic step in the workflow itself?

Yes, the generated file must be added to the wf via custom scripting. If you have an automated externaltask to do the generation in the first place, then adding a few steps to insert the generated file into the wf is simple, see attached file for (training, not production-ready) example.
