Custom Fixed Layouts

I'm new to Custom Fixed Layouts and I'm having difficulty getting our first one working.

I've made the following xml file named "my_first_fixed_area_layout.xml" and placed it into default\main\WORKAREA\shared\iw\config\fixed-layout\

With this in place, I can select "Custom Fixed Layout - Single Row" as the site default, but I can't pick it when creating a new page.

After reading some forum posts here on devnet, I made the following changes to our pagetype-config.xml file:

I'm thinking that "references missing layout refid" means that I'm using the wrong name to refer to my Custom Fixed Layout, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas?

If I understand your problem correctly then this is what you need:

Step 1. Remove your customizations from the pagetype-config.xml file.
Step 2. Validate that your FAL (Fixed Area Layout) is valid.
Step 3. Create a new page file, and while creating that select "default html" page type. If you see select that in the second drop down you'll see your custom FAL.

After decompiling FixedLayout.class, it appears the layout id of "fixed-layout" is hardcoded so its not picking up my layout id "fixed-layout2". What I'm trying to do is create a custom page type that uses the fixed-layout class (to reveal my available fixed layout templates) and use a custom stylesheet.

Any takers?

As i understood there are two types of layouts:
1) Fixed Area Layous (FAL):

They are used by LiveSite: Sitepublisher to divide the canvass into rows and areas, this is used to decide where a user can drop components, and force them to follow a general layout (say header+body+footer).

This is useful, on top of that, because you can decide the resulting div or table structure.

2) Custom layouts:

This are the XSL used by LiveSite to create the html from a filled sitepublisher canvass, this is where the tool insert all of the html tags, the content from the components, includes the pages resources (JS / CSS etc).

If you need 1: you just need to create an xml file and place it into /iw/config/fixed-layout (create it if its non-existant), i called the file descriptive.xml.

This is where you can create your row / area structure, no further configuration is needed, your new page will be able to use this FAL (if you can't see it into new pages just try to change the page type to default html).

For 2: you need to create the appropriate xsl and make the changes into the pagetype config that list it.
