I want to hide some of the containers for a selected group. Is there any way to do that ?

Eg:
Lets say I have 5 containers and I want to hide 'container2' for users belong to 'ABC' group.

As written, I don't believe that will work - because the allowed element is a sub-sub-element of the item element - not the container element (as you attempted to do)

Instead, try using FormAPI code to determine the user's role or group(?) information and use that to set the visibility or read-only-ness of the container.
