Unable to activate store: I/O error

Hi there,

I am trying to create a new store on a NAS share. NAS is currently mapped as G: to my TS server.

Added the following entry to the [iwserver] section of iw.cfg :
[html]store_directory_NAS=G:\iw-store\NAS[/html]

When trying to active the store, i get the following output on the command prompt :

\>iwstoreadm -a NAS
Unable to activate store: I/O error
[/html]
Inside iwtrace.log i see this :

[Tue Nov 17 17:16:28 2009] Error: could not create G:\iw-store\NAS (error 1).

[Tue Nov 17 17:16:28 2009] Shut down invalid store 0x68 at "G:\iw-store\NAS"

NAS share is a restricted environment.

Is there a specific user account that needs read/write access to the NAS ?
Is HOSTNAME\iwglobal group the culprit ?
Can stores be really configured on a NAS share ?
Any other reason for this error message, how can we get rid of this ?

I believe you have to go through the registry and set the path for the store to use the UNC path instead of a drive letter - I'm not sure, but I think that's all you have to do.

If you cannot figure out how to do that (please try first) - post again - I might be able to find the information in some of the documentation I created for one of my customers in the past (don't have time right now, not sure when I'll have time to rummage through them)

Tried it. But it doesnt seem to work. Getting this error inside iwtrace.log :

[Tue Nov 17 17:42:40 2009] Failed to create the server state directory \\SERVER.domain.com\apps1\iw-store: Operation not permitted

Hmm - I think you either need to configure things so that the server process owner on the TS box has full permissions on the NAS (at least within that path root) or you have to create a new [domain] user who has administrative rights on both servers and configure the iwserver process to run as that domain user.

You might try checking for KB articles on the support site and/or opening a case with Support to see if they can assist you. (I believe there is a KB for this, but I don't recall the number off-hand)

As you have mentioned, i tried to run the "Interwoven TeamSite" service to run using the domain service account. But when i try to restart the service, it gives a windows error, "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in timely fashion". Iwtrace.log doesnt log anything.

Referring to support articles 2072, 49040 etc. It seems like the service account needs to have too many privileges to acheive this, but am not sure, which one will make this work.

It needs those privileges to do what it needs to do - so either grant them or don't bother trying to do this.

The iwglobal group is how TS maps TS groups to OS groups so that the native file system isn't offended. It has nothing to do with being able to activate the store or run the iwserver process.

By default, I believe it is the SYSTEM account that does this - as it has full administrative rights at the file system level and has master privileges at the TS level. If you're having problems getting this to work, you should probably be on the phone with Support

I had opened a ticket with support. But haven't received a valid response yet.

The SYSTEM account wont be having full access to the NAS as the NAS is controlled by different set of domain users.

So, I believe its the restricted NAS that is causing this issue.

Has this been resolved?

If the NAS is in AD domain, I think it can be done by adding your TeamSite server to the domain to which the NAS belongs to.
