MS Office 2003 bug causes AutoExec to not run

We've noticed an issue with Word that is causing our footer macro code to not run when the user is using Word as their email editor. Microsoft acknowledge the bug here:

The problem is that the code that creates a link to the integration object doesn't therefore get to run, and so none of the events fire.

My questions is, can anyone provide some advice as to how to get around this issue (other than turning Word as email editor off)? The code is in a template that is saved into the STARTUP Word folder, rather than normal.dot (so none of the documents are based on this template).

I'd be grateful for any advice!

A complete hack may be to monitor the Outlook client events for creation of new emails

You could then determine whether or not Word needs "booting up" with your AutoExec code and remotely execute special (publicly scoped) code in one of your Word VBA modules, possibly the AutoExec code itself

Another hack would be to force Word to be open before Outlook is launched.

All in all, I'd advise your client that to workaround this issue Microsoft (and I think Autonomy?) recommend you do not use Word as your email editor

In any case, Word as your editor can cause problems down the line for your VBA code if you haven't properly accounted for that fact..
