ui_custom: Any way to get user info passed with a Custom Tab URL?

Hi all--

Is it possible to dynamically append the current user's details to a URL we specify within a custom tab declaration within ui_custom.xml?

In case anyone was curious, I was able to achieve my desired functionality by having my Custom Tab invoke a customer toolkit servlet which in turn grabbed the "iw_user" cookie from the request object in order to create a CSClient object using getClientForTrustedUser(...). Critiques on this approach are welcome!
