You're talking about using block elements instead of inline elements to apply inline styles. TinyMCE's default features won't allow you to do that with bold and the like. If you want to insert a div from a toolbar button, you'll have to write your own plugin.

Alternatively, just use CSS to make the spans display block:
span.example1 { display: block; }
