callserver does not work

Hi,

I want to use IWDatacapture.callserver method.
I used a small servlet at server side and it returns the output in browser as expected in FormAPI pdf.

But while calling from DCR, it gives error i.e.'Permission Denied' to parent.getScriptFrame() call.

Help is appreciated.

Does your Servlet URL have the same Domain as DC Form?

If the answer is "No" - you are having a problem with the Browser's cross-domain Security Model. From your Browser Window
you can send a request to any URL you want. If however "Child" tries to call-back the "Parent" - it is allowed only if their
respective Domains are identical. To make a rough sample - finace.yahoo.com can modify www.yahoo.com but not www.google.com

If 'Yes' then I need to deploy web application to TS webserver as right now I am using my local GlassFish V2 server.

If 'No' then I am using the same URL as I use in browser, only difference is parameters.

If you want to use callserver(), then yes, you do. But then you'd also be breaking another "rule", which says not to run your own app using Interwoven's servlet engine.

It's clear Interwoven implemented callserver() under the assumption that only a local servlet or CGI would be used to get data. This is clear from the documentation:

"The response from the post should be JavaScript that manipulates the form or creates and populates data structures"

A better implementation would be to have a listener for an onreadystatechange event, just like most implementations of the XmlHttpRequest object have. This way, a "local" function is called that can use the data returned from the request. So it doesn't matter which domain your servlet or JSP or CGI or whatever is on because it's just returning data and a local function is used to handle that data.

My solution to your situation has always been to use my own XmlHttpRequest object and not use callserver() at all. Then I have full control over those requests and how they're returned and even if I want them to be async at all. It requires a little different thinking than just using callserver(), but it's just as effective.

Is there then some overhead on the client? Sure. But it's not 1996 anymore. People have beefy machines.

I'm saying that if you have two Pages opened by the same Browser Instance and if the scripting in one of them is trying
to modify another - it'll be allowed only when these Pages have identical Domains. An attempt of Cross-Domain changes is
blocked by the Browser with some sort of browser-dependent permission error.

What to do in case of "TS - Some other App Communication" is a different story. For a callServer you can perhaps code TS
CGI/Servlet that makes a request to your GlassFish-based App, parses Http response and then turns around and formats callServer
output.

In more complex scenarios you'd probably want to use CSSDK to code some request Broker and expose it as a Service/Servlet etc

I think both the ways are good to adopt.
In second approach suggested by ISCBorisB, I think I need to develop middleware application in TS server.
And in the other approach of XmlHttpRequest I can directly communicate to any domain server.
