Have you ever done an upgrade before?
Are you familiar with all that has changed between 5.5 and 7.2.1?

If the answers to these questions is "no" - get someone else (with the experience and knowledge) to do it - because this is not just a case of installing the newer software, it's also a case of having to make significant changes to most, if not all, of the customizations that were created in 5.5.

As for reading material, you can read the various Upgrade Plan documents that exist on the Support site - but you may have to dig in several different version directories since they don't seem to supply a full bundle of manuals with each release - just the ones that actually changed (unless they've finally resolved the issue I filed about this).

But seriously - this is a non-trivial task that would best be handled by someone who has the knowledge and experience -- and yes, I consider myself one of those people - and as luck might have it, I'm currently available for hire -- but even if you go somewhere else for the help, I'd strongly advise doing so since the amount of time this will take could easily vary from pretty much anywhere between 2 and 12 months.

I wish I could short the stock of your customer, because they are in trouble.

Going from 5.5 to 7.2.1 is a significant task. I would not estimate less than 2 months to do such a thing and test/debug can push that quite higher.

I hope you *really* know what you are doing because you and the customer have a long road to travel.

You are screwed. I would never sign up to do it in that time. It could happen, but there are so many things that can go wrong, the odds of doing it successfully are slim for someone on mine or Adam's experience level.

This time frame is unrealistic, and you should try to make them understand it now.

I just upgraded from 5.5 to TS 7.2.1. I was the original implementer, I have done every customization, and I used to be a technical consultant for Interwoven. It still took me 3 months

What I would suggest is to discuss this with support and if you want to do this work then you should take the help of someone experienced in doing the migration and learn from the experiences.
The work is not easy and the time frame is not feasible but you can always discuss with someone experienced in doing the same.

If your company is only allocating 1 month for the migration, and 1 week for testing - they're being incredibly foolish and short-sighted (and optimistic).

I would consider 1 week for investigation / planning / scoping. Followed by a minimum of 4 to 6 months of migration work, followed by at least 2 to 4 weeks of testing. If things go smoothly I might be able to beat that schedule but it wouldn't be reasonable to take on such a significant project with less than that amount of buffer space. (Keeping in mind, that a bunch of time gets eaten up in meetings and/or waiting for additional resources that may be utilized for something else at the same time).

For 7.2.1 you can run teamsite without license for 48 hours please check similar for 6 series.

Soooooooooo....what happens when you spend 2 days trying to upgrade to 6, then your temp copy expires before you finish? Pretty dumb to try and rush it or cut corners. Hire someone like Ghoti or Andy. Otherwise you will likely regret whatever you do and it will take much more time to fix what you broke.

At present, I told them the truth as per your comments about the time and feasibility.

But good things are there are no workflow,no customization of UI.

So data migration of content is not big task as per my understanding.

I like the others in this thread wish you all the luck in the world.

What would help:
1) have a new machine/VM
2) install 7.2.1 fresh - do not do an upgrade on the same box
3) depending upon the amount and type of content you have.
a) if you hare a flat HTML house without any DCRs and such and you don't care about previous editions you could copy staging from 5.5 server and paste into the 7.2.1 server and submit and off you go.
b) if you have DCRs then it gets more complicated. I suggest you look for information on IWMIGRATE command (I think it's in the Command Line Tools manual)

Your savings grace is that you don't have any customizations. The Other thing you will have trouble with is your user base. Things look different. If you have very computer literate users who are not afraid of change then you're ok, otherwise you have a training issue.

You didn't mention anything about openDeploy but don't forget about changing allowed nodes, and any firewall changes you may need to push content from a different server.

Our conversion from 6.5 (which is easier than 5.5) took about 4 months.

The easiest answer is "uninstall and re-install". More time consuming, but easiest.
