xsl error

i have a
root container name=root
------tab name=tab1
-----------container name=cont1
---------------item name=item1
-----------end of container
------end of tab

how do you access the value of item with name 1?when i make a DCR, the tab name does not appear in the xml file.i wrote it as root/tab1/cont1/item1. this dint work. neither did root/cont1/item1. can anyone plz help.
