restarting TeamSite

With TS 5.5.2 on W2K, is it still necessary to reboot the TS server in order to restart TeamSite (IWServer)?

To be sure the IFS service functions correctly, yes. The iwserver service is not guaranteed to restart correctly--reboot is still the only for-sure method.

if we de-activate the stores before re-booting, upon startup, do the stores get activated automatically?
if not, is there a way to configure to do that.
thanks in advance,

What do you mean by de-activate?...
If the teamsite services are set to automatic in the services control panel, they should start up automatically.

I mean, if I de-active a store using the iwstoreadm -d command, which takes the iw-store offline basically. Then without re-activating it, I reboot the server, does the stores that I de-activated come back up upon startup, or do they stay de-activated.
The teamsite services are set to automatic, I haven't touched that. My question was, will the de-activated stores come online automatically as well?
Why am I asking this question? Well, I am performing a backup of the additional stores that I have. Before my backup software runs, I de-activate the stores so that they aren't online (available to modify through Y
and I stop all the TS services. After backup, I have to reboot to bring TS back up, before I reboot, I don't know if I should re-activate the stores or will the reboot bring them back online automatically.
Hope this helps,
Mukesh

How about just stopping all the Interwoven services and then restarting them (in the right order)?
Johnny
I dont know the answer to that, maybe someone else can.
But if you have a test/dev server.... why dont you just try it out.
de activate the store and reboot the machine... see what happens

I believe that 5.5.2 SP3 should allow this to work reliably (
on Windows; Unix never had this problem
) - earlier versions of TeamSite would occasionally have problems where (as I understand it) not all the threads had been cleaned up and restarting the server in that state potentially caused undesirable behavior (I know for a fact that it didn't work in 3.0.1)

Before 5.5.2 SP3 you should NOT start and stop windows teamsite services and expect everything to work properly. Changes were made in that release to ensure file access was handled properly. If you start/stop services before Sp3 you may corrupt the backing store.
TS6 will also support starting and stopping services on windows.

Sometimes I need to stop the TeamSite Services to make changes/fixes... (I.E. run iwfsck, copy/backup the store).
I then reboot the server as recommended.
Am I not doing this properly? If not how should I accomplish this task?

Other than the fact that the original post had the steps reversed (start/
stop
should have been stop/
start
) - yes you are doing things correctly if you are stopping, running your administrative processes, and then rebooting.
If / when you upgrade to SP3 (or TeamSite 6) - you should be able to re-start the processes rather than rebooting - however, rebooting will remain a supported method.

if you deactivate a store, teamsite will remember that you deactivated it, even across reboots. if you activate a store, teamsite will remember that you activated it, even across reboots.
if you want a store to be up after you reboot, it has to be up before you reboot.
If you are shutting down teamsite anyway, why deactivate the stores?

thanks for the information about activateed stores and deactivated stores across reboots.
The reason to deactivate the stores is for backups. Our backup plan deactivates the stores and stops the services, then it performs the backups and reboots. So that is why I wanted to know if the stores reactivate upon startup. Based on your answers, seems like we'll have to activatee and then reboot.
Thanks,
Mukesh

But if you stop services, there is no reason to deactivate the stores, right? If teamsite is down, you can back up the stores without fear.
